So I've gone a little chicken crazy! We've been pondering the idea of chickens for years because we have the room and we even have a darling coop my husband made a few years back in anticipation of getting chickens. At the time, life was more than a little busy! We had one Palomino Horse, one Jersey Calf to bottle feed (rescued from the local feed store, a story for another day), 4 baby chicks I had hand hatched for 24 days (and raised for 3 weeks before giving them back), one Lab, 2 cats and then there were the kids! Three in all at the time but 2 potty training and I decided this was just too much!! Specifically too much pottying of everything to deal with (not to get too personal!). Anyway, we have downsized in some ways. We have another child, one year old Carolyn! But we only have 2 cats and 2 dogs now with them mostly being outside animals. Plus the children are getting older and can help with the chores!
I hope I'm ready! It would be great to have our own eggs...so I've ordered some fancy funky chickens! My good friend Leah is sharing in the adventure with me. Since I have already had baby chicks she has decided to raise them for both of us until they are big enough to be outside! We are so excited, and spent hours on the phone picking out an assortment of fun breeds. Here is what I ordered:
White Plymouth Rock, Silver Laced Wyandotte, 2 Easter Eggers, and 2 Faverolles plus we have a friend who has Rhode Island Reds and will give us some already laying as soon as we are ready. We've chosen pretty breeds with pretty eggs in an assortment of colors ranging from cream & brown to greenish blue! I figure if your going to do all the work of caring for chickens and hunting for their eggs they should be pretty and interesting too!
This time of year I just can't help myself with dreaming up new projects that turn out to be a lot of work in the long run! I wonder what I'll be saying to myself next fall when I'm ready to simplify again!
